Shizuoka Day 1 – Oigawa Railway

Posted on October 13, 2021

Jonathan has been obsessed with trains lately and there was a Thomas the Train event going on in Shizuoka prefecture so we went on a weekend trip to the area. We drove up and stayed at a hotel right next to Shizuoka station. The boys loved it because they could watch the trains go by from our window. First time we saw a Shinkansen train, the Japanese bullet train!

Saturday morning we ate breakfast in our room and headed to the train station for a long train ride to go up the Oigawa railway to Senzu Station.

It was a beautiful trip up along side of the Oi River but the long ride required some entertainment for the boys.

We made it to Senzu!

They had the Thomas event at the station itself. They had life size character trains (they were real, decommissioned steam engines) that you could go into and various little rides perfect for the boys’ ages.

  • Hiro and James
  • Percy!
  • Winston!

After getting some lunch at a food cart we got some prime real estate to see Thomas ride in. You could actually ride Thomas! We missed those tickets but seeing him pull in and maneuver the train cars and himself to the turn table was pretty cool.

After Thomas got turned around we rode some more rides and saw Bertie the bus.

We said goodbye to Thomas and explored a little bit right outside the station. They had some restaurants and souvenir shops. We got ice cream and found some stairs that went down to the river. We enjoyed a few minutes down there, boys mostly tossed rocks into the water (as all boys do at rivers).

Gorgeous day

We didn’t snag tickets to ride Thomas but we did get tickets to ride a legit steam engine for the ride back. It was pretty cool!

Watching this this operate was incredible. I can’t believe they built these as far back as the early 1800s

The ride back was beautiful and both boys were pooped and ended up falling asleep so we got some rare snuggles in too.

This train stopped one stop short of our main train transfer and instead of waiting for a short one stop train ride we decided to take a 20 minute walk through a quiet little town to get to our next train station.

We finished our train ride back to Shizuoka and grabbed some dinner before calling it a night. This restaurant had the cutest little kids meals.

What a train filled fun day we had!
